Agency PR people are assholes too…
April 21, 2008
We got a rumour over the weekend about copywriter Eric Kallman and art director Craig Allen, a pair of TBWA/Chiat/Day, N.Y. creatives who were responsible for a lot of the Skittles work there under ECD Gerry Graf — well they were resigning and shuffling off to a new locale.
Since you kids all love the journalistic integrity SuperSpy & I try and put through here — I wrote Jeremy Miller — TBWA PR guy — this morning to try and confirm that it was the case.
Dick writes back (at 3:39 pm EDT):
“Already posted on Creativity online.” (This is the contents of the entire e-mail)
Uh… thanks dickweed for your help & assistance. Since we got scooped because of a wanker at TBWA — here is the link to the article. They are off to W+K Portland and will be working on the Old Spice and Careerbuilder accounts under CD Mark Fitzloff, but also eventually hope to expand their repertoire on Nike and Coca-Cola.

Ah, big news. That is used to air a petty grievance. Standards high, as always.
April 21, 2008 at 8:26 pm
Perhaps if your performace as a “journalist” was better you’d get a better response. Based on this post – it’s no wonder he didn’t get back to you sooner. There are assholes everywhere in this business…including ad blogs. But Miller doesn’t happen to be one – again you need better fact checking. And you need to apologize.

class act.
April 21, 2008 at 8:27 pm
I bet you the PR guy was the last to know. Speaking as one whose been there, they usually are. Jeremy’s not usually a dick.
April 21, 2008 at 8:37 pm
From what I understand in working with Jeremy, he only deals with real journalists. That may be the issue.

Not going to happen — call them like I see them — and in this case, it fits him like a glove.
Colleague:
Nice of him to be old school about it — but here in this century — bloggers are “real journalists” too… and it doesn’t serve him well to think otherwise
April 21, 2008 at 8:47 pm
The funny part is you think you got “scooped.” You have to be a competitor to get scooped. And I hate to tell you this, but you aren’t one.
Now go and punch yourself in the face 5 times.
April 21, 2008 at 8:54 pm
what is your problem? the guy was probably just busy. what did you want him to do…take you out for dinner and try to spin the story? oh, that would require you admitting who you actually are…
April 21, 2008 at 9:13 pm
it’s a good thing you’re not a war-time journalist. you’d get your ass kicked, or killed. where in the journalist handbook does it say you get to offer your opinion? someone must have ripped out the page in mine…journalism=reporting facts. this looks like an opinion of someone you don’t even know to me…it’s people like you that will keep bloggers from ever being “real journalists”
April 21, 2008 at 9:16 pm
Agency bloggers are assholes too.
(sorry, it pained me to write that, but seriously).
April 21, 2008 at 9:51 pm
Looks like you got pissed because a smart PR dude found out you had the scoop (because you were stupid enough to tell him so) and then he decided to manage the release of the story the way he wanted to, by leaking it to Creativity. So he controled the story in the best way possible for his agency, meanwhile you look like another shitty internet blogger who just got owned by someone who knows what they’re doing. Ha ha. You suck at what you do.
April 21, 2008 at 10:08 pm
gotta say…… i like reading this blog… so i am not gonna go nuts and insult the person running it. if it sucks so bad, stop reading it. i for one enjoy it, it’s a nice break in the day. don’t be douchebags and ruin it.

No worries dude — I’m having a great laugh at all the comments here…. pure comedic entertainment — one & all! Props to you every single last one of you.

You are pissed because the PR guy didn’t open the Kimono to someone who blogs annonymously and may, or may not actually work for a competitor? And you attack him for it? Gawd, the self-importance you guys give yourselves is amazing.
“Hey, let’s publish annonymously–taking cheap shots at people based on little more than a whisper, and then get pissed when we aren’t respected as real journalists.”
ego check time

Jeremy is a really nice guy and he did his job protecting the agency as we have been taking a lot of hits from everybody lately. Every ad rag and blog says Chiat is losing control so why would he prove it by letting an anonymous blogger have the scoop when he could let Creativity do it?

This is a great site and I enjoy reading and speaking here and maybe you would have been the cool kids choice but that’s business.

Sent this comment yesterday, but it didn’t get posted, so will try again.
ondownlow, there is one critical difference between you and the majority of people on this thread: credibility.
It’s pretty clear from the comments that we’ve accomplished far more in the business than you will ever hope to achieve. Game recognize game.
Is it necessary for someone in your position to have veteran skills in the field? No. superspy appears to have little big league experience; however, she compensates by showing street smarts and an understanding of the industry players. You got no game, friend.
Perhaps in time, you’ll develop into something. But right now, your bravado is just pathetic. Game recognize game.
Think about that before you mouth off again. Seriously.

Anon:
Thanks for the laugh again — alas you are so far off base with the comment, it truly is a fucking laugh riot.
I’ve accomplished far more than a vast majority here (harsh to some, but true) — both in the ad game and other fields — made high-levels in well-recognized global agencies — and then done other things which are far more redeeming.
That being said, all is not what it seems in this blogging world nor in the ad world — but keep them comin’ — I truly enjoy your attempts at unintended humor (or maybe you are trying to write comedy?)
As for the “game” — I didn’t realize this was a bar — if so, are the chicks hot? or were you referring to basketball… because I truly do suck at that… and that the is the god’s honest truth — but the Bulls suck too. Chicago hasn’t been truly good at the ad game nor basketball since Jordan retired the first time, right?
April 23, 2008 at 12:41 am
If what you say is true Down Low and you have achieved such high levels at agencies, then the real story for Agencyspy should be how a tool like you, who (as these posts have revealed) have such a lack of understandin of the biz and the role of this blog. I know many bloggers whom I consider real journalists. Why would you expect the flack to reveal this info to someone who doesn’t have the balls to reveal his name? grow up.
April 23, 2008 at 1:00 am
Yeah right:
You are so right — I must have lost all sense of the proper way to do things in agencies (because they are beacons of ways to do/run business these days) — right about the time I was getting all those “handys under the table…”
Ha Ha Ha!

Oh, how the mighty have fallen. What, pray tell, do you hope to accomplish in your new role here? Honestly would like to know. Friend, you’ve barely shown you’re capable of coherent writing. And no, this is not an attempt to be humorous. Not at all.
My visits to this blog have been to find insider information served up in a smart—albeit snarky—style. You are not delivering the quality work most of us are accustomed to. Sorry if that amuses you.
April 23, 2008 at 1:43 am
Dude,
why can’t you just show some maturity and admit you dropped it on this one? You just jumped the gun on something you didnt really understand. no biggie. just suck it up and leatn from it. if not, please just answer the question of why this guy should have revealed this info to you?
April 23, 2008 at 4:14 am
Are you one of those “laughing on the outside, crying on the inside clowns”? Please enlighten us (specificly), with all of your great experience, with how these comments are “off base”? (hmm…didnt think so, clown boy)
April 23, 2008 at 10:10 am
Over:
That is the great thing — I don’t have to do shit for you — at the end of the day, I don’t give a fuck if you or your ilk read/comment because I’m not an attention-seeking whore like most in the industry.
It is no skin off my nose — but I do enjoy your comments if nothing else — “it entertains me” (now see if you can spot the reference in relation to your specific comment…I’m betting you miss it.)
April 23, 2008 at 12:09 pm
clown boy,
1. of course you wont explain yourself. (just as i predicted)
2. not an attention seeking whore? riggghhht.
3. the guy you called a dick has a tough job and puts himself out there to take hits. but you are a coward who hides behind this blog.
3. sorry you cant hack it in the biz. l8r

Over:
*yawn* — wake me up when you have something of interest to contribute… until then…

ondownlow, you’re not even a player in the industry. You haven’t even earned the right to be a whore.
Hell, based on this post and thread, you’re not even a legitimate spy. You’re a wannabe. A poseur.
I’ll go back to my original position that you lack credibility. If you really hope to remain in the game, you need to develop some pronto.
You got spanked by a “PR asshole,” as well as the people on this thread.
You don’t (and obviously won’t) answer all the questions posed on this thread. But you ought to do some introspection and soul searching, apprentice spy. Seriously.

Having been an agency PR guy, I can tell you it is probably not his fault. Ad agencies don’t get PR. Never have, never will.
