We have our honourary spies out in the field and they are kind enough to send us nuggets of delicious info to post, ponder & talk about with you all…

So on that note, we had a nice e-mail wondering about the current state of Northlich, a smaller mostly-Ohio based agency headquarted in Cincinnati. Apparently they recently lost the Finlandia account (which they have held since 2004) and it could be the first in a series of losses from the Brown Foreman portfolio.

In addition, they recently booted a senior account person out the door when Long John Silver asked for a new person to rep the account for the agency.

Our kindly honourary spy seems to lay this at the foot of the new CEO, Kathy Selker, who apparently “doesn’t have a clue” and has never worked in advertising prior to getting the gig at Northlich (ed note: although since she has been there eight years, you’d hope she has picked up at least a couple of tricks over the years — but this is advertising — and “hoping” in this industry… well…for lack of a better term… is a hopeless pursuit.)

Now discuss amongst yourselves… the topic… well it is self-evident it seems

this couldn’t be from the recently booted senior exec could it?

  2. BobG Says:

Yuck. This kind of gossip is bad for the client, the agency, and everyone who works there. (and I’m in a company that competes with Northlich). We can do better.

A talented Ohio creative director i know said about Cincy: “Cincinatti has talent, but the problem is that most of their area clients are a part of Proctor & Gamble or are managed by people who used to work for Proctor & Gamble. So agencies are pushed to create the formulaic communications that P&G folks are known for.”

As the ad exec in question, let me tell you — I was done a favor — by the client. The Northlich, and the CEO feel terrible about all this. that’s how this business works baby. No reflection on the agency — which I still believe is strong and does work that competes with the best of them. Hell I’ve been doing this for twenty-five years and the last time I was laid off was 1988!! Most people would have been canned four or five times by now.
