I guess it’s a POV issue here. I didn’t feel it was mean, especially given the context of the night. Remember – in advertising you have to consider the audience. This was meant more for a night of award show revelry versus presentation in the vacuum that is YouTube, or an ill-informed blog entry in AgencySpy.

Alex is just an unfortunate victim of being arguably the highest profile name in the ad biz today. That alone opens him up for pokage. You can call it bein’ a hater, I call it a potentially mis-aimed spoof that was understood as just that when it aired.

“Spoofs” only work if they are based on truth — that’s what makes them funny. This isn’t funny because it’s not only NOT based on truth, but is actually mean and comes off as jealousy. AgencySpy is also an audience of ad types, but it seems to have bombed here (although I’m sure it was hilarious to those who created it.) Uh, yeah.

Geez. Let me preface this whole discussion… This video was a spoof presented as part of the Nebraska Addy’s Award Show, sandwiched between other videos that poked fun at other ad industry archetypes, such as clients whose core values are ‘quality, service, and commitment.’

To me, and judging by the reaction of most of those in attendance, this video was a well-intentioned spoof of one of the most recognizable and successful figures in our industry – perfect for an audience of ad types.

It’s a spoof-that’s it. Whether or not it’s even funny or if SKAR’s work sucks is irrelevant IMO. It’s entertainment presented for entertainment’s sake, not to bring the ‘competition’ down (I’m sure the largest client SKAR could ever have is a shit stain on CP+B’s drawers, so I use the term ‘competition’ loosely). Bottom line, if people aren’t allowed to ’spoof’ people who are more talented or more visible than they are, then why don’t we just kick the entire YouTube generation in the nuts while we’re at it.

I dont work for this place, but I do work in Nebraska… and I will guaran-f*cking-tee that you don’t have the balls to put up your work. If you do, I can also guarantee that the shop I work for in NEBRASKA pwns your work.
