Wow, now I know why McCann sucks as much as they do and don't get any medium besides maybe print and broadcast.

Did she ever realize that you can actually use a fake name and e-mail address to sign up for a blog?

And even if you would leave your real name, why would that matter?
What's the difference between Chris F. from San Francisco and anonymous?

Whether a message is anonymous or credited has always been a communication tool. If agencies really want credibility for a client, particularly in a business-related public policy matter, they will often run an ad delivered by a corporate exec. The source of something always provides a context, but an anonymous message has to stand or collapse on its own merits. The presumption in the vid is that people will think twice before posting hurtful stuff, fearing shame or litigation. Retribution is another legitimate fear or we wouldn't have anonymous whistleblowers in government fraud, waste, and abuse programs. So I'm for anonymity, but I don't think it's a freebie.

But I have seen countless flamey threads that truly worry me because the point seems to quickly devolve into inflicting emotional pain, posters building themselves up by denigrating others, and, weird as it seems, some kind of peer pressure to agree with the attacks (or stay mute) or suffer abuse yourself. In short, the kind of immaturity associated with middle school where snarky is its own reward and invective is the idea. Lord of the Flies via remote keyboards. Anonymity doesn't always bring out the best in people. I'm more likely to flip off a bad driver who cuts me off than I am someone who carelessly bumps into me on the sidewalk. If Gertrude Stein was right in that we're all basically the same age inside, brutal attacks probably hurt the thick-skinned, too, just at different levels of the subconscious.

I wish I had an answer, but I'm afraid the solution isn't in policy but between the ears and before the keyboard. I do think we should think twice about what we're posting, and why and how we post -- not just because of fear of litigation but because some minimal civility fosters debate and advances the thought needed to form supported opinions or even solve a problem at hand.

Lastly, I'm not sure there's really such thing as anonymity, unless you're leading the bin-laden lifestyle.

I don't know whether to call this stupidity or bullshit. How can you censor comments on an open platform like internet? It's the WEB!!!! You cannot do away with Anonymity!!!!

There are 100,000+ blogs/sites/forums out there abusing/insulting/defaming people innocent or otherwise... And face it. You cannot do anything about it.

This video to me was like - "Hey, it would have been nice if we could fly, walk on water, be invisible.. sadly none of this is going to happen.... but, atleast i thought about it!!!"

My point here - STOP capitalizing one a poor soul's demise. Stop trying to use his suicide to increase your popularity!!!!!

Nina's view is from the top. She's and the rest of the corner offices are due their view. Yet everyone else is also due the opportunity to state theirs. I'm anonymous because I'm not a big cheese and I have a mortgage to worry about--and I'm only talking about the one bedroom condo kind. So big shots--off your high horses since you make decisions that are "just business" that deeply impact others' lives.

Those who are still on their way up are just trying to get others to acknowledge the elephant in the room. If you're a CEO, ECD, EVP Planning, Account Management GAD, COO whatever at that level, fess up when it's corporate BS and when not. We get it, but we know you'll all benefit much more than us. You have power over all of those below you. Blogs are "power to the people".

That said, comments on Mr. Paul Tilley's post death are horrible--there are so many adjectives I can't write them all. However, before his death, he was in the position where that happens. Yes he was named. Frankly, almost anyone in that position would get it (think Debra Norville-sp?- post Jane Pauley). DDB Chicago is a great place that has really struggled in the last few years. I'm not saying it's nice, but it comes with the job. Things like this have always been said, you just couldn't google them.

Maybe it's time to bring back dennis Ryan, Vinny Warren or Don Pogany. Just saying.

Let's end this blog debate. They're here to stay. People who know the truth and who matter know what is banter, venting and what should be listened to.

"If you don't have the courage to put your name on your comments, then you shouldn't have a platform ..."

Umm, does this woman read newspapers? The ranks of the courageless could fill the West Wing of the White House, the Pentagon, several "war rooms" worth of election committees and the PR arms of several dozen large multi-national conglomerates.

Oh, wait, they already do.

Gimme a break.

This is a fascinating discussion. Just to make it interesting and ironic, we’ll remain anonymous.

DiSesa should consider the reality that we’re in an anonymous business. The people behind the advertising dumped on society everyday are completely invisible to the public. We always have been. And like it or not, there are elements in our own industry doing far worse damage to society than blogs (e.g., cigarette advertising, political advertising, children’s advertising, pharma, etc.). If we’re so damned concerned about the children, why not go after these industry segments too?

DiSesa is part of an industry that forces its messages on people. We’re disruptive. We’re annoying. And we’ve always hidden behind the First Amendment to ultimately make a buck. Yet DiSesa would like to censor the messages she finds distasteful. Can we start with this video?

DiSesa speaks about the obscene nature of anonymity. Yet she doesn’t realize she’s part of a corporate environment that doesn’t welcome open and free expression. Bad mouth the unethical or corrupt actions of your Madison Avenue boss and you can expect to be booted, blackballed and banned. Additionally, the leader who tells the troops their office door is always open rarely finds workers taking advantage of the invitation. We should wonder why that is.

DiSesa should think long and hard about the anonymous critics out there. Who or what is really inspiring the anonymity?

If the anonymous messages were insane ravings, wouldn’t we all simply dismiss them, just as we ignore the street corner lunatic screaming the end is near? Or are we really more upset to feel the stinging truths within these messages?
