Fast Company has released their annual “50 Most Innovative Companies” list and Anomaly is the only ad agency to be represented. Anomaly comes in at twenty-four with the opening line of:

“There’s a body lining on the floor – no actual flesh, just the crime-scene white-tape outline of a 6-foot-tall man frozen in a mad dash. “Here it is, death of the old advertising model,” smirks Jason DeLand, a partner at Anomaly, pointing at the floor of his company’s Soho loft space. “Shot as he was running out.”‘

Smirk. That sounds about right. Read it all here.

AKQA is number 48. Nice.

“Which is why, after five consecutive years of profitability, AKQA is one of the most dangerous global forces in the ad industry. While ad holding companies and tech firms spent billions in 2007 to snap up digital shops, AKQA fended them off, opting instead for a $250 million investment from private-equity firm General Atlantic.”

See it here.

The rest of the list is as you would expect: Google is number one, Apple, two and Facebook, three. Nintendo is ten. They deserve it. Method, the eco-friendly cleaning product company, comes in at sixteen. In 2005, the company brought in $15M, but by 2007, they were up $100M. Whole Foods is thirty six and on and on.

    akqa does some wonderful work.

their name, however, is not an acronym for “all known questions answered” i’ve seen in numerous articles lately.

it’s actually the name of the founder:

    Ajaz Khowaj Quoram Ahmed

Seriously, can someone tell me one original or good thing that Anomaly has done?

  4. Farmer Says:

Akqa is a production shop. That Coke site in the pic isn’t their idea or their assets, they just did the flash. Another great thing they’re associated with is the Halo 3 site, which is McCann’s idea. I don’t understand why all these “digital” agencies get the credit they get when all they’re doing is producing someone else’s work.

  5. yes Says:

Oh please — Farmer shut up unless you know what you are actually talking about. McCann or most other traditional agencies wouldn’t know an interactive idea if they tripped over and fell on one.

  6. John Says:

Seriously… Anomaly needs to spend less time sending out pr packs and more time actually doing something people in advertising should be jealous of. The virgin stuff and the converse stuff are not so great, and don’t think we don’t remember the dasani spots with the talking goldfish women :-)

Farmer is right. The Halo 3 music and diorama, the whole idea of the campaign, comes from the McCann SF. AKQA stitched that stuff together in flash. It’s a nice site, but I agree they acted as a production company.

  9. Steve Says:

I totally agree with Farmer. 100% correct. They call themselves an ad agency, but they just rip other peoples work. That Coke and Halo sites were all originally done by other agencies…really they just did the production and flash. Plus, I heard they treat their creatives like garbage – tons of resumes on the street. AKQA is not an ad agency – they’re a web production house.
