A Note On Peter Kim

February 8, 2008

We were talking about Forrester’s research earlier today written by one Peter Kim. Steve Hall gives us a bit more background into Kim when he was the marketing director over at Puma.

“The author of that Forrester study is the same Peter Kim who, years ago, fanned the flames over a spoof ad turning it into one of the most famous examples of exactly how not to deal with bloggers and maintaining “control” over message in a day and age when that is now not so easily controlled.”

Hall is referring to a tussle between AdRants, Gawker’s, other bloggers and Puma over some fake, blow job print ads. Get the whole story here.

I first posted the puma ads, promising my friends who created them to not reveal their names – and I didn’t. Nice to see that Peter Kim, who threatened to sue me, “sort of” let the cat out of the bag three years later. Meanwhile, I still won’t name the creators, as I keep my word.

Just FYI all. I Only watermarked the ads after they started showing up on ten million other blogs with no link back to ours.

I’m not sure if Peter Kim called everyone else but he did call me over in Denmark at the time – which was nice of him, I guess – to tell me that he would have to send a C&D. I explained that I would not remove the ads but that I would blur the trademarks (Trademark infringement is of course something they actually could take us to court for) to appease him. I still got the C&D and unlike other blogs, I did not post it as I considered it private correspondence. I did post my reply on Adland though.

In retrospect, I find it funny how I was cast as “the man” (pejoratively of course). Just as Dabitch never revealed her sources, I’ve never thrown the people who decided how to react under the bus, either. (BTW yes, I had to call a lot of people based on domain registry records.) Sure, I’ll take the arrows in the back, which was part of my job – and I’ve certainly learned a lot since then.

Yeah that’s a bit annoying actually considering you were only doing your job. I don’t even mention your name on Adland, I do mention “Peter P. Mastrostefano” which was the signature on my C&D, and I just found this old post which keeps track of your worldwide phonecalls. :) http://commercial-archive.com/node/103608
