The U.K. advertising standards agency has received a number of complaints from folks who did not that Johnny Depp’s new film “Sweeney Todd” is a musical. They claim the advertisements were misleading.

Richard Brunton, head of online film site Filmstalker, says, “When the U.K. trailer came out there was nothing in it that pointed it out to be a musical. I would say the advertising has been blatantly misleading and I assume that the feeling was that less people would pay to see a musical so it would be better to sell it as a horror movie.”

Entertainment Weekly added, “The commercials that hide the singing are crafty enough that they might lure a good number of unsuspecting folks. Most people don’t take kindly to being tricked.”

We find this so funny. That comment from EW is hilarious.

i have to be honest, i had no idea this movie was a musical either. i would have been pretty ticked off if i had actually decided to go see it. i hate musicals.

Seriously what complete idiots! It is a famous musical- plus the main trailer had Johnny singing “I will have vengeance…” Every write up of the film in the press (and there was a lot of press) mentioned that Johnny sings and that it’s a musical.
