A Dirty Old Man’s Thoughts + American Apparel’s New French Ad

Over at AdRants, they’ve posted a shot of a new French American Apparel ad where a young woman flashes the camera. It’s typical of American Apparel and honestly, the French can be much more permissive about such displays. Our thoughts on AA’s advertising are very clear. ‘Rants goes on to make some commentary that many have made before, but is worth thinking on:

“-you will come to realize that women of a certain age really do like to pull their shirts up and show us their tits. Are we to blame American Apparel for simply mirroring this increasingly common behavior.”

However, in typical Mad Men style, his parting cum shot (yes we’re totally going there) made our stomachs roll over:

“The girl in this ad seems to have no problem showing us hers. Although, from the darkened coloration of a certain area of her shorts in the topless portion of the shot, we wonder if she’s enjoying it a bit too much for a photo shoot.”

Did Steve Hall and the Rants machine really need to go there? The point of their post was that the young woman had no problem baring her breasts. It was her choice and thus, was slightly empowering to her. Then, naturally, the blog had to take her down a peg, dehumanize and take whatever power she had away. Yawn.

It’s kind of like the title of piece he wrote about us, “Agency Spy Gives Adrants A Nice Piece Of Ass.” Yeah, it’s clear that we’re all female over here and so the double entendre – blah, blah, blah we get it. We actually respect our fellow bloggers, so were a bit surprised at his virulent comments. He thanks us for giving him another piece of ass to look at in the post. No shit.

So officially, these two post have moved Adrants to “dirty old man status” in our eyes. Maybe The Boys Club can give Adrants a consultancy gig. What do you think?
