Last Call For McCann And Microsoft?

There’s a new creative assignment from Microsoft that has four agencies vying for the prize. AdWeek is reporting that McCann Erickson SF, JWT in New York, Fallon in Minneapolis and Crispin Porter + Bogusky are in contention. How much you want to bet that McCann loses out? The decision is to made as early as January.
Univeral McCann is Microsoft’s lead agency. You know how one thing can lead to another. Is this last call for McCann? Adage had this inside bit: “Although details of the proposed project were not immediately available, it is believed that the campaign will attempt to help Microsoft improve its image. When asked if it will be a way to get back at the popular Mac vs. PC campaign from Apple with its unflattering portrayal of Microsoft, one executive familiar with the situation said, “It may be.”

McCann in SF is finally getting whats coming to them. They’re a huge, very slow, un-organized, un-creative, global mess. I personally know they had a windows branding assignment that they screwed up on.
I was there for a short time and figured out very shortly that there were three types of people there:
1. Main Street Employees – The bitter group that was there before they got big. They are either over-paid or lack the talent to get a job elsewhere.
2. Ex-Ogilvy Sellouts – I’m sure Matt Ross probably thought Arod’s asking price was a good deal. He brings in all of his ex-ibm/yahoo cronies for fat paychecks and
3. Misguided talent – The people that don’t see the writing on the walls. They get there, hoping for the best but get lost in all of the crap. The only possible escape is move over to TAG. If not, kiss 600 battery goodbye.

McCann SF has earned the nickname “McCan’t”. They have botched a few projects in the past and have relied on smaller shops to save their asses.
