I have worked with many digital shops and continue to work with some of them, especially those that have automotive accounts. My experience is that some, like the March First fiasco of folded franchises, were exactly the sort that you seem to be wanting to hear more of. Most though, are just trying to do the job of building relationships for their clients through web and other interactions.

I honestly don't know what compensation the digital shops get compared to the agencies, but heard at one time that an add agency needs one employee for every million dollars in business they do. Web shops need about ten employees for the same level of business. Not a good ratio for profits!

With 20+ years as an artists' rep I have watched even the most country club of agencies become harder working, and the hard working shops become sweathouses. If you don't like working on Saturday, don't bother coming in on Sunday is commonplace, and twelve hour days typical.

And still, sometimes, amazingly creative work gets done. That's the testament to the desire to create.
