Selling Out Your Dead Husband

November 13, 2007

We recently mentioned that Courtney Love had sold Kurt Cobain’s (R.I.P) back catalog for advertising use. Now, Yoko has gone ahead and sold a rare home recording of Mr. Lennon’s (R.I.P again) tune “Real Love” for a JC Penney ad created by Saatchi & Saatchi. The spot began airing on Sunday during that very strange ensemble drama, “Brothers and Sisters.” Yes, The Beatles have sold tunes for spot before, but never a master recording. Needless to say, Lennon fans are irate. Listen to the song above.

Our gut says that as an agency, you should consider that licensing a song that is a rare, B-side from an iconic artist might not be such a good idea. Fans are going to be pissed and it furthers the idea that the advertising industry doesn’t care about anything other than cash. “Is nothing sacred,?” scream the consumers. Hmmm… We will say that it does play quite nicely for a holiday themed spot, but what do you think?

  1. I am almost positive that Nike has already used Instant Karma (yes, the Lennon original) in an advertising before. So she has been selling Lennon out before.
