Maurice Levy Slams Web 2.0

Maurice Levy, Publicis top dawg, recently has this to say about internet advertising and start-ups:

“It’s exactly the same situation as we saw at the end of the 1990s, when everyone thought that because he had a website he’d get the valuation. Now everyone building a Web 2.0 operation believes he will receive the advertising.”

Levy was full of back handed compliments for sites like Facebook, saying that the amount of revenue these sites were bringing in was “unbalanced” compared with their large audiences numbers because advertisers were frightened of intruding on visitors. He went on to question the Microsoft’s purchasing of Facebook shares saying that, “If it’s real money it’s insane.” 

Our favorite comment? “Far too many people are building plans based on advertising and they may well be disappointed because there is not enough money for everyone.”  The man has a point.
