Our brother at Fishbowl NY (if you live in New York and work in media you should be reading this blog) is reporting on a new invention from Dolby Labs that will prevent advertisers from making television ads louder than the actual programs:

“The issue of TV audio variation across channels and during commercial breaks is one which affects most of us – in fact, rushing for the remote to dampen the sound when an ad breaks in at uncomfortable volume has become the modern day equivalent of the quick-draw. Solutions to this problem have been sought for years with varying degrees of success, but now a new technology unveiled by Dolby promises to provide “set and forget” volume-leveling while preserving the full listening experience at any volume level.”

Really… why is everyone always inventing products to mess with advertising? We’re not so bad. Honest.

Perfect. Take away the use of another executional element. Make the agencies think of smarter ideas rather than irksome tactics. I’ll vote for the use of that brain over mechanical brawn anyday.

About frickin’ time. I hate ads that are louder than the programming.

It’s not like ads for reputable brands are the loud ones. It’s either some “Sunday, Sunday, Sunday” auto super sale, or crap about how I can buy tax foreclosure properties at auction. Oh, and of course, the steel drum into to a Girls Gone Wild ad.

Also, wouldn’t this help keep volume levels up? Occasionally, I’ve seen ads run lower than programming volume, making them hard to hear.
