Teen Love And How Not To Get It
September 26, 2007
“The Newspaper Association of America is launching a contest that asks teens to create a YouTube video showing how they use newspapers in print or online.”
Huh? Oh it gets better:
“Our work has shown us that many teens follow the news, and are quite aware of what’s happening in their communities and world around them,” Sandy Woodcock, director of the NAA Foundation, said in a statement. “
Some teens are certainly following the news, but um… online. You know… the place where you’re launching your contest? By the way, the ad for the contest above is the most unfriendly teen thing we’ve ever watched. If newspapers want to engage teenagers in their publications, why not add a teen section in say, the big Sunday issues? That might make it a must read. Why not offer the same thing, five days a week, online? Or at least, launch a better contest that actually engages their view of the world, journalism and/or creativity. “How do you use newspapers” is so dorky it hurts.

I think the most common use of the newspaper in print by teens is as papier-mâché – homecoming floats and what-not.

Strange. But I guess you have to credit them with trying to branch out into new mediums. Uh. Wait. Boy this whole game is getting mighty confusing.
I wonder who made that vid for them, btw. Kinda corny. Not very Gen Y.
