Forget About Sex And Go Online

September 21, 2007

According to a recent survey performed by ad agency JWT, when asked how long they would feel OK without online access, 15 percent of respondents say one day or less, 21 percent say a couple of days, and 19 percent say a few days. Only one out of five claim they could last a week. Sounds like us. Twenty percent also say they’re spending less time having sex. Okay… that doesn’t sound like us. What? Are you people crazy? The internet is fun, but come on…

The rest of the survey offers up some stats the confirm what you’ve probably already been thinking:

* Women are slightly more likely to own a digital camera: Two-thirds of men say they own a standalone digital camera (that is, a camera not built into a cell phone), compared with almost three-quarters of women (74 percent).

* Notably, women are slightly more likely to own a gaming console: As many as 44 percent of women say they own a gaming console such as Wii, Xbox or PlayStation, compared with 39 percent of men. (Ed.’s Note: What have we been saying?)

* Men and under-35s are most likely to use WiFi networking at home: A quarter of respondents said they have WiFi at home, 30 percent of men and 22 percent of women. Almost a third (32 percent) of the under-35s use WiFi at home compared with 23 percent of the middle cohort and 19 percent of the 55-plus respondents.

* Personal video recorders lag among the oldest cohort: About a quarter of respondents (24 percent) use TiVo or similar devices; the gender difference is negligible (24 percent of men vs. 23 percent of women). Again, usage skews younger, dropping from 27 percent to 24 percent to 16 percent.

* 97 percent of those surveyed have internet access at home. Among these, men and women are equally as likely to be cyberians – that is, answered that they spend “a lot of my time online.”

I rarely miss a day on line. For me it’s my ‘television’ for lack of a better word. Granted there is information and entertainment on TV but on line opens up that idea and runs with it.

Anyone who has spent time on line can tell you that just because you’re looking at one thing doesn’t mean you won’t be looking at something else a minute later, related or not. Endless possibilities create a much more interesting experience for me than the tube.

BTW I love that term, ‘cyberian’ yeah, that’s me.
