An Ad Agency Gets Kicked Out Of Hell
September 7, 2007
Remember we talked about that offensive ads coming from New Zealand ad agency Cinderella for pizza franchise Hell? [See: Hitler Does Not Make A Good Spokesman] Lobbying groups have since begun a large scale boycott of the pizza maker for its provocative advertising techniques from a condom letterbox campaign for its “Lust” pizza, to references over the Pope on billboards. By the way, that condom campaign was the most complained about ad in ASA history.
The relatively new owners of the franchise, Tasman Pacific Foods, at first held their ground, but have recently decided to go with a more conservative route and drop Cinderella all together. The brand is called Hell. Should be interesting to see just how conservative they can really go.
Catch this – in the mean time, Cinderella’s owner Matt Blomfield has told Tasman Pacific Foods (TPF) that he has no confidence in the new conservative marketing approach and plans to sell the 10 franchises he owns personally. Did you catch that? That he owns personally. We know New Zealand is on the far edge of the map, but lord… it’s really totally outlaw down there isn’t it?

Hell Pizza is a weird company with great pizzas. When driving around Rotorua (NZ) last Friday, the local Hell store was filled to over-flowing – much more than many of the other fast food options. So why is this? How much does marketing get the store packed out? And will Hell Pizza take of anywhere else but NZ? Not sure of it will fare well in the US but time will tell.
