Mitt Romney Wants You

Presidential candidate Mitt Romney is getting on the user generated bus with his new create an ad contest. The former New Hampshire Governor only has a few rules for the spot, which can include: “Mitt’s biography, his family, his record as Governor, or his agenda for a stronger America. In fact, your ad can have practically any theme you choose as long you support the campaign creatively and responsibly.” The campaign staff has provided on the photos, clips, etc. one needs to create a national ad.

Asking the voters to create your national campaign ad is a nice attempt at outreach and inclusion. However, every brand knows the dangers that can come by way of consumer generated content. Oh boy… this is sort of like asking for trouble. While it’s true that they’ll be able to weed out any videos that say, feature Larry Craig, those cast-offs are bound to end up on YouTube playing again and again and again. Right now, Romney isn’t suffering too badly on the video site. The good is mixed in with the bad, but give them the tools and the public may just go to town. It’s a risky move if you ask us.
