Fallon To Drop Four More Bodies?
August 29, 2007
The Why Fallon Is In The Shitter series has been a one of our favorites since we began Agency Spy. Here’s the recap: To save its ass, Fallon has to join up with the cult of Kevin Roberts to form the SSF group. Then two of their best creatives jumped ship to join BBH. Then, of course, Pat himself called it a day. See the history of Fallon and ode to Pat here.
Now… Rumors around the Fallon water cooler is that four more creatives are about to leave the struggling agency, but haven’t given notice just yet. THANK YOU tipsters. Who do you think it could be? What about one of the team on the very hot Sony Bravia spots – writers Juan Cabral or Richard Flintham? That was Fallon UK, though so probably not.
We just don’t know…. If you do, please inform us! Otherwise, congrats to you lucky four. Fallon is a ship worth abandoning.

You mean-spirited motherfuckers….
Pat Fallon is the most decent person I have ever had the
pleasure to work for. Leave him out of your sorry-ass
comments.

Who knows? Maybe this is actually the BEST time for Fallon over the last couple years? Sounds like change was definitely needed. Maybe with the power shift, some of the crusty old bodies dropping, and the new ECD, they can start an upswing, or a start-up or do-over. Everybody loves to see the great fall — but, also, everyone loves to see a comeback.

Anyone who was any good at Fallon has already left the place. Most of those left aren’t good enough to get jobs in decent agencies. As for the comment about Pat Fallon being decent – I’m sure there are as many who would say the opposite.

Let’s be Honest: Most of the people left there are damn good. Whoever says otherwise hasn’t worked with the people who are there.
Sure, there are a couple mediocre creatives in the mix, but mostly, they are very talented people who wouldn’t have a hard time finding a good job if they were so inclined. Maybe yours?
Ex-Fallon NYer: Did I miss something? I didn’t notice anyone trash-talking Pat in this post.

Let’s see – there’s Dean Buckhorn who is great. And err…well Peck and O’Leary are ok if you want one kind of joke. Go on name some others who are as good as Camp, Rodriguez, Barrie, The Wixom’s, Calle and Pelle, Tierney… it’s time to admit it’s over for Fallon. Hello Saatchi Minneapolis

Let’s be Honest: I’m not naive about how backstabbing this
business is – I worked in it for over 20 years, and my husband
still does. Leaders of agencies have to make tough decisions that my cause people to lose their jobs, and that’s life in advertising.
However, some leaders are real assholes, and I’ve worked for a
few. But I still say Pat is one of the nicest people I’ve worked for.
So many ex-fallonites: I wasn’t referring to that particular post.
I had just finished reading all the articles and that’s the post I responded to. You sound a little bitter….
September 4, 2007 at 3:35 pm
Let’s be honest:
Well, ok, since you asked so nicely:
Buckhorn.
Hanson.
Gibbs.
Riddle.
Peck.
O’leary.
Sorenson.
Hansen.
Appleby.
Roseblade.
Don’t get me wrong. There are serious problems there. But I don’t think they’re in the creative dept, for the most part.
Ex-Fallon NYer:
I sound bitter? That’s interesting, because looking what I wrote again, it still reads entirely positive to me.
September 5, 2007 at 6:41 pm
Well I already mentioned Buckhorn, Peck and O’Leary. Are Hanson and Hansen the same person? I don’t know Sorenson – what has he/she done please? I’m not aware of anything award winning by Appleby or Roseblade in recent years and Gibbs hasn’t been associated with anything great since God knows when. It’s not exactly great is it? I think my point about the people who have gone being far better than those who remain still stands
September 5, 2007 at 6:47 pm
My point that there are a good number of very talented creatives there stands. The people you mentioned all were there for a short time. Yes, there’re all damn good. But that doesn’t mean the people left aren’t.
If you don’t even who’s working there, how can you say that there’s no one good left?
No, Hansen and Hanson are not the same person. And that further shows how unfamiliar you are with the creative dept. there.
September 5, 2007 at 7:12 pm
Of course Let’s Be Honest is unfamiliar with the creative department.
He’s been out of touch ever since he moved back to London.
How is London, Paul?

pat rocks.

Perhaps there’s a connection between the short time (excluding Barrie) that talented and very hireable bunch were at Fallon and the state of the agency? I admit I don’t know Hansen and Sorenson. That’s why I asked you about them! Their names are not names I’m familiar with in connection with any famous work from anywhere so please tell me more. I admit Dean Buckhorn is an awesome talent that’s wasted at Fallon now. The others I also know and feel able to comment. In fact some of those guys left are the best in the business (of rolling a ball up and down a pool table);-)
September 6, 2007 at 1:24 pm
Of course the short stays are a result of the state of the agency. No one is arguing that and that doesn’t say anything about the talent level of the people who stayed. Nice red herring, though.
I agree that the people left were very good. That’s never been in dispute. What was in dispute was your claim:
“Anyone who was any good at Fallon has already left the place. Most of those left aren’t good enough to get jobs in decent agencies. ”
Which we both know is completely false. And such a grand claim becomes even less credible when you make it clear that you don’t even know who works there. Want to know more about them? Try google. Or award annuals. I’m not going to to the work for you.
Maybe the people that left are, as a whole, better than the people that are there. I don’t know. That’s pretty subjective. What’s your criteria? Awards? Because it’s pretty even, stacked side to side.
Clearly, everyone I named is at least good. And some are great. That they are working at an agency that’s full of managment problems and fleeing clients does not change the fact that their talented.

Look, all this whining is just so boring and honestly wildly short-sighted. You need to get your heads out of the creative department’s collective ass and really understand what makes an agency great: the total agency culture. Anyone who’s anyone understands that Fallon stop being Fallon when it sold itself to the French. Once an agency stops charting its own course and surrenders to the quarterly earnings demands of a public entity the culture goes to pot, the work suffers, people leave and it’s all down hill from there.
September 21, 2007 at 4:36 pm
To Let’s Be Honest:
Hansen and Sorenson are a team Fallon picked up from Carmichael Lynch about a year ago. I think their most awarded work is Porsche print.
And for what PaperSlipper says, it’s true. A lot of agencies have sold their souls to the devil and really can’t flourish as they once did. That is another reason Crispin remains one of the smartest agencies out there — MDC only owns 49 percent; and the partners 51%.
September 24, 2007 at 12:09 pm
Wow Fallon is saved. Some guys who did some boring print have arrived from across town!
September 25, 2007 at 8:37 pm
Back when I worked at Fallon I always thought that Bobby Appleby was the best creative there, though Buckhorn was good too.
I loved that agency and am sad about its fall. That happens sometimes, they wrong people come on board, the French take over and it all goes pear-shaped.
Appleby is still good though. Really good.

Billy likes to drink soda … Miss Lippy’s car is green
September 27, 2007 at 10:10 pm
I’m guessing Appleby wrote that last part.
Long live Skeletor!
