Wal-Mart Is Under Attack By Facebook Users
August 28, 2007
Wal-Mart is under attack from Facebook users. We kid you not. Angry Facebook users have hijacked a page aimed at selling back-to-school supplies to college kids and turned it into a missive on the evils of Wal-Mart’s business practices. Originally, the Roommate Style Match group on Facebook.com was heralded by the press. However, its the kids that matter. This could happen to your client’s just as easily, so pay attention:
“Of the more than 200 posts, only a handful relate directly to dorm decorating. And instead of color coordinating with roommates, users seem to prefer talking about how the retail giant “destroys communities” and prevents unionization. To be fair, there was one comment on a 4-pack of men’s environmentally friendly organic socks for $4.”
And this comment says it all:
Janine Carmona, wrote that “Facebook should take the number of negative comments on this page as a note that we don’t support this company [for] its use of a space for social networking. This space is for people talking to other people. Facebook, get your priorities straight.”

Thank you. This perfectly illustrates the central tirade of the Toad Stool blog, namely “Your Brand Is Not My Friend” which is all about the foolishness of marketers trying to glom onto social networking sites and other 2.0 media where people go to hang out with and talk to their friends– not listen to marketers.
Your Janine Carmona stated it quite well.
