Terry Richardson On Tom Ford (He’s Done With Lindsay Lohan)
August 20, 2007
High end fashion advertising really is the perfect blend of what our industry is all about - gloss, sheen, narcissistic and focused on selling an elusive concept to the masses. Super designer Tom Ford has been playing this game for years. When Ford launched his M7 fragrance for Yves Saint Laurent he did it with his own full frontal nudity. His new scent, Tom Ford for Men, was supposed to use demure images (of Ford of course) shot by Marilyn Minter (see below) in April, but he’s switched out the campaign for racier photographs of a dewy woman’s body taken by Terry Richardson. “The photos range from tame to titillating — the most shocking being the Tom Ford for Men bottle wedged between a woman’s glistening thighs, with the bottle barely covering her bare genitalia.” [From WWD] We’re happy Ford decided to remove himself from the print spots. Really… if you’re not in fashion, do you have any idea of who this man is? Probably not. Best to go with sex, sex, sex. Also, considering that one of Ford’s new scent apparently smells like cocaine, Richardson (a god to the hipsters trolling through the LES and a beacon of cool for brands) is the perfect choice to shoot these edgy spots.
No one does sex - real sex - like Richardson who has turned into an almost iconic fashion photographer having shot those racy Sisley ads, spots for H&M, Nike and a host of other brands. In the video above, Terry takes on little girl lost Lindsay Lohan. He’s the new-aged Annie Leibovitz.

and what makes Terry Richardson any different from a Porn Photographer?

What has happened to Tom Ford shouldn’t have to happen to anyone. But money, fame, success does it more often than not. The old adage about not believing one’s publicity seems custom-tailored made for this balding, transplanted, desperately aging roue. Now that independent wealth shelters him from having to play the poseur-ing nice guy, Mr. Ford has revealed his true plummage– that of an angry, sex-bent, narcissist. The NYTimes article about his new Mad Ave shop was priceless and far more revealing than any of his cheap “revealing” ads. On his FORD-MAN salesmen/manques looking down their nose-jobs at the reporter posing as a customer, his response was along the lines of– it was obvious that this man didn’t have the resources to be a serious Ford shopper– and the salesmen/manque smelled him out. Oh please– has someone told Mr. Ford that Wall Street-ers and other well-heeled prospects do not wish to dress in cocaine-dealer chic? Will someone please set the alarm clock and wake up this sleeping snooty!!

I don’t think Terry Richardson would claim to be any different from any porn photographer. As long as he was being true to himself he wouldn’t give a shit and that’s part of the reason he’s the shit.
