Ok Go + Bad Brains + The Rapture + David Beckham = ?
August 17, 2007
Adidas, the premier sponsor of the US Soccer League, has launched a new site, MLS Represent, that pairs each franchise with a musical partner. Each band or artist has created original music and songs for their team. The public can then get online and download the tune for free. The web portion of the site will then be followed up with broadcast spots and performances by the artists at home games.
We’re into this attempt to get those outside of the core soccer demographic to come into the fold. Look, we downloaded that Rapture song for the New York Red Bulls and we’re not sure what a corner kick is. The artist selected cover everyone from the cool 20-somethings (The Rapture) to the hip-hop heads (Mike Jones) to the early 30-something rockers who love OkGo, but grew up on the rush of Bad Brains. Check out the full list of band/musical pairings below.
Akwid: “¡Chivas Explosivas!” (Chivas USA)
Bad Brains: “D.C. United” (D.C. United)
Barenaked Ladies: “TFC” (Toronto FC)
Blackpool Lights: “Ain’t Nobody Gonna Stop Us Now” (Kansas City Wizards)
Damone: “Revolution” (New England Revolution)
Mike Jones: “Houston Dynamo (Don’t Play)” (Houston Dynamo)
Kinky: “We Are the Galaxy” (L.A. Galaxy)
Meg & Dia: “The Mighty R-E-A-L” (Real Salt Lake)
OK Go: “Here Comes the Fire” (Chicago Fire)
The Polyphonic Spree: “H-O-O-P-S Yes!” (FC Dallas)
The Rapture: “Whoo! Alright, Yeah… Uh Huh” (New York Red Bulls)
RJD2: “It’s Your Crew” (Columbus Crew)
Rose Hill Drive: “Goal!” (Colorado Rapids)

Barf.
I got into MLS because it was a cool, underground-y kind of scene. Maximum fan participation, minimum corporate stupidity. Now Beckham comes and the corporations on the MLS like white on advertising.
Damone’s Rev’s song if fair, at best. And we’re gonna have to hear it over and over. (Yes, I pay money to watch soccer games.)
I will be mightily pissed if they STOP playing the vastly superior, truly inspiring, and ass-kicking Viva La Revolution from UK Oi-boys The Adicts.
Viva, indeed.

Probably no quicker way to get a band some exposure and then make them yesterday’s news, but other pro sports do it so this kinda sets soccer apart as far as who their fans are.
Not as bad as being in a cell phone commercial…which is why I can no longer listen to Goldfrappe or Feist.
As one who doesn’t follow soccer, I am running this by my soccer obsessed friends to see if this is cool or not. Ha!

SexySpy…
A corner kick is when someone takes you in a corner and kicks the shit out of you. Depending on your masochistic tendencies you might like it… Or not.

Very cool campaign… I just read about this in Adweek. It’s from the agency EVB. I love that you can download all the tracks for free.
