Donovan McNabb Is Cringing In Philadelphia
August 14, 2007
Stick and Move’s newest spot featuring Eagles QB Donovan McNabb for VitaminWater is a stinker. When we reviewed their recent commercial featuring 50 cent conducting an orchestra, we noted that it was full of tired cultural and racial jokes. This McNabb entry is titled “Power and Glory” and is even more riddled with yawners from it being a fake trailer to the “old guy” (who looks like Orville Redenbacher) to the Star Wars lines and even the Rocky moments of McNabb training. Dudes… just because you throw in some pop culture references and ethnic jokes (please note: old white man plus young black guy does not equal funny) doesn’t mean it’s going to be entertaining, memorable or worthy of a laugh. This spot has taken a cue from Berlin Cameron and is trying way too hard to be ironic, while not nearly hard enough to be creative. Where is the remote?

Yawner, indeed! I live in Philly, so this is especially hard to swallow. Though I have to say, VitaminWater does do a great job at underground marketing here in town. They’re all over the place, sponsoring shows, events and the like.
