The Advertising Standards Authority is taking cosmetic company L’Oréal over its knee for false advertising in its broadcast spots. It seems, like all good make-up brands, L’Oreal has been adding extra lashes to its model’s delicate little eye lids in their advertisements for mascara. More specifically, the ASA is upset over the extra lashes, which got stuck on Penelope Cruz for L’Oreal’s Telescopic Mascara commercials. McCann Erickson is the agency for L’Oreal worldwide. For some reason, The Times UK is reporting that the ASA was “shocked to discover that the perfect parabolic curve of batting lash was achieved with a bit of glue and false hairs.” Really? Shocked? Uh, duh… yeah. Cosmetic companies and advertisers of any sort have been “juicing” up not only their models, but their products since the dawn of time. This new action could have enormous ramifications for Revlon, Maybelline, Almay, Lancome, et al. What’s next? Is the ASA going to go after fast food spots? We hope not. It wouldn’t be so pretty. See what we mean here.

The ASA reacts to consumer complaints. It’s not just a group of old men dolling out punishment. Like we said, consumers are all over advertising these days. Best to watchyaback.

  2. Smoke and Mirrors…food photography is an art form, lightening is a art form. Art should be taken more seriously and put back into the public school curriculum not to make more artist but to educate the future leaders of our country how Art relates to other things such as advertising and reality.
