Beck’s Beer Is Up For Grabs
July 24, 2007
Beck’s beer is heading into review on its $40 million dollar account. Under the watch of the incumbent Ground Zero (what an unfortunate name, no?) who scooped up the business just one year ago from Burnett, Beck’s grocery store sales have gone down 8.5 percent. Judging from the commercial above – it’s no wonder. A bunch of very late twenty-somethings on a huge yacht ruggedly sailing to the sounds of … what is that – Linkin Park? Isn’t that a band for fifteen year olds? And what’s with the weird editing?
Anyway, there’s a lot of rumors swirling around with Adweek saying Ground Zero will not defend and Brand Republic saying they will. The latter publication also notes that the independent Los Angeles shop will go up against McCann Erickson Germany. When GZ won the account in 2006, they beat out Burnett, Interpublic Group’s Lowe and Bartle Bogle Hegarty, so maybe they’ll make an appearance, too.
Ground Zero has offices in California and New York. The agency also handles advertising for ESPN, the History Channel and Toyota.

From what I know, Beck’s was a horrible client. They never knew exactly what they wanted, and had them working on round after round.
When it came time for the review they asked Ground Zero if they wanted to defend. When Court and Co. said, ‘no thanks,’ the folks over at Beck’s were shocked! They couldn’t believe it.

Oh, and they had nothing to do with the Beck’s spot listed above. That was probably handle domestically, not globally.
