In 2000, French group SOS Racisme brought a lawsuit against L’Oréal for excluding non-white women in its shampoo ads. It’s 2007 and the brand has been found to be guilty. The Garnier division of the beauty empire, along with a recruitment agency it employed, were fined €30,000 each after they recruited women on the basis of race. A senior figure at the agency was given a three-month suspended prison sentence.

Christine Cassan, a former employee at Districom who was charged with finding promotional models for Garnier, told the court her clients demanded white hostesses. She said that when she had gone ahead and presented candidates “of colour” a superior in her own company had said she had “had enough of Christine and her Arabs”. Holy crapola! L’Oreal must be crapping in their pants considering the racial tensions in France already.
