Cocaine Is Cool
July 10, 2007
Zoo Advertising out of China has taken the resurgence of cocaine and heroin use and turned it into a glossy print ad campaign for fashion line Sisley. The brand is known for risque ads like that totally smutty Terry Richardson shoot, which everyone freaked out over. But, hello? We were so not surprised. It’s Terry fricking Richardson! See his work here. That’s what dude does. Anyway… this new print ad? We totally hate it. We don’t give two figs about the tongue-in-cheek play on drug use. It’s more that nothing looks good here – the clothes, the girls, the environment. Nada. Everything is way too coke-whore. When Kate Moss got caught doing cocaine in those grainy photos, girlfriend still made that nasty nose killer look attractive. She was backstage – glamorous. She was dressed in a hot, short, expensive dress and knee high boots – glamorous. She had her hair tousled, lips pursed and she’s Kate Moss, so you know – glamorous.
So, maybe you are a fashion junkie. Do you want to compare yourself to this image? The ad is straight trashy, which makes the brand look trashy. End of story.

Statement on a fake Sisley campaign
20 July, 2007
In the recent days, images which are told to be part of the new Sisley advertising campaign have been published in internet.
One of these images shows some girls “sniffing a vest”. The allusion to drugs and alcohol is more than clear. We would like to clearly state that the Sisley brand (and the Benetton company) has nothing to do with these images and therefore we refuse to be linked with them.
Please also note that these images infringe Benetton’s rights in the Sisley trademark. Our Legal Department has therefore been retained to take all advisable actions to protect the company’s rights and interests.
The next Sisley campaign will instead have a very special testimonial, Stephanie Seymour, worldwide recognized as an icon of fashion and beauty.

I can’t believe I’m addressing the obvious here, but since no one has, let me strip of the veil of politically correctness. Like it or not, real or not, bottom line is that the ad does/would indeed work. And extremely well I might add. Whether or not it’s responsible advertising is another story. We can all agree it is not. But since when have advertisers sworn an oath to responsibility? We have Paris Hilton and Britney Spears (to name just 2) showing us that it’s okay to snort coke, get pregnant, get drunk, whore around, and show off their cyber privates to anyone with internet access. Oh, just don’t get caught. Paris is connected to Juicy Couture, Kate Moss is connected to Balenciaga, Chanel and Burberry (amongst others including her own line). Is this hurting them? Quite the reverse. The connections never cease. Additionally, their bad behavior does nothing what-so-ever to curtail the brand proliferation. The ad works solely because it IS “straight trashy” -America feeds, lives and breathes off this type of trash. Wealthy offspring of the Nouveau Riche have deemed and made it so. If you don’t see the covert brand value of this ad, you’re in the wrong business. Any fool can denote is as ‘irresponsible’. -That’s not the point.
