W+K Website Backlash
June 26, 2007

Wieden + Kennedy’s (you know, the cool ad agency?) has launched a new website that is very smart indeed. The home page is now a subject map interface with an associated time line. Geeks everywhere are losing their minds at this display of visual communication and from an international advertising agency no less! While we love it, we’re pretty sure that most visitors to the site are going to be awfully confused and quickly frustrated. Check out the comments going on at their semi-internal blog for a taste of the backlash. The word “pretentious” makes a few appearances. Some people just have no concept of high art. Sheesh. Here’s our favorite comment:
“But it’s not just you. A lot of agency sites are quite laboured conceits. They tend to shoe-horn the execution of a hastily-thought up concept across tone of voice, navigation, design and content. And end up being either confusing, unsuccessful or conceited. The shame for WK is that you’ve just done what everyone else does.”
